Please read and share this brief note.
For the past several years we have partnered with Willow Lane Elementary to provide the entire 5th grade class a real world working experience at Donatelli’s. In order to participate the kids have to write cover letters and résumés, go through interviews with Donatelli’s management, then train for their position and finally come in and work side by side with one of our staff for a couple of hours over the lunch rush.
At the end of their workday, it is common to hear this was the “best day of my life”!
Our goals have always been to help these children understand how important first impressions are. To help them see that choices have consequences…both good and bad. To show them they already have real life skills they can draw on in the future. To show them opportunities that many would not see without this experience. In fact, I would bet, many of these children have few options open to them currently.
From all the classes we’ve seen, this class needs the support of Donatelli’s faithful more than any other.
We just spent 4 hours interviewing about 50 kids…the great majority of whom have already overcome obstacles in their young lives. I came away sad…..but inspired
Why inspired? Because together we can give each of these children will have the opportunity to work for a few hours…which will give them hope and allow some of them to see that options exist.
The kids work the following Tuesdays from 11 to 1:00 at Donatelli’s: February 9th, 16th, 23rd and March 1st.
We need your support to fill the tables…at least two-thirds of these kids will have no family come to see them work. Please be that family. And spread the word…it may seem like a cliche´ but life is about connection and opportunity…these children need both.
